The Brooklyn Nets introduced their black-and-white identity in 2012 when the franchise moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn. Created by JAY-Z, who was a minority owner of the team at the time, the original system combined a basketball marked with a bold “B,” shield graphics and typography inspired by classic New York subway signage.
The logo system received its latest update for the 2024–25 season. The shield that had served as the primary logo since 2012 was retired from that role, while the simpler “B” basketball symbol was promoted to primary status with cleaner, thicker seam lines. The global logo was also updated to place the ball inside a circular “Brooklyn Nets” wordmark. No individual designer has been publicly credited for the 2024 refinement.
The black-and-white palette was unusual in the NBA when it debuted and was chosen to give the Nets a distinctly Brooklyn identity. JAY-Z’s original concept drew inspiration from the monochrome signage of New York’s subway system and from the era before 1957, when Brooklyn last had a major professional sports team of its own.
