Bridgestone introduced the current version of its corporate logo in 2011, refining an identity that had been in use since the 1980s. The update retained the familiar italic wordmark and red-and-black “B” symbol, but softened the shapes, opened the letter spacing and improved legibility to create a more modern and approachable appearance.

The 2011 redesign was intended to represent what Bridgestone described as “flexible strength” and the ability to respond quickly to change, rather than the heavier sense of physical strength and speed emphasized by the previous identity. Bridgestone has not publicly credited an individual designer for the refinement, although contemporary reports indicate that the design process was handled by an agency in Japan.

The Bridgestone name has an unusual connection to founder Shojiro Ishibashi. His surname literally translates to “stone bridge,” but he reversed the two English words to create “Bridgestone,” believing it would sound stronger and work better internationally. The company’s earliest 1931 logo even used a keystone shape, directly referencing the meaning behind the name.
