BP is one of the world’s most recognizable energy brands. The company’s identity is closely connected with oil, gas, fuel stations, lubricants, mobility, energy infrastructure and global retail networks.
The current BP logo is known as the Helios mark. It uses a green and yellow sunburst form that looks both like a sunflower and a solar symbol. This replaced the older BP shield identity in 2000, when the company moved toward a softer and more energy-focused visual language.

About BP
BP’s history goes back to the early 20th century. The company began as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company after oil was discovered in Persia, now Iran, in 1908. It was incorporated in 1909 and later became one of the major names in the global petroleum industry.
The brand went through several major identity and business changes over the decades. For many years, BP was visually associated with a shield-style logo. That older mark had a more traditional petroleum-company appearance and reflected the visual language of fuel brands from the 20th century.
In 2000, BP introduced a major rebrand and replaced the shield with the Helios symbol. The new mark was named after Helios, the Greek god of the sun. Its green and yellow structure helped the company present itself as a broader energy brand rather than only a traditional oil company.
Logo Design Notes
The BP logo is one of the most distinctive energy-sector logos because it avoids the heavy industrial look often seen in oil and gas branding. Instead of using a shield, flame, drop or mechanical symbol, the identity uses a radial flower-like form.
The green and yellow palette gives the mark a brighter and more natural tone. The layered sunburst structure suggests energy, movement and light. Meanwhile, the lowercase BP wordmark keeps the identity simple and recognizable next to the symbol.
Because of its symmetrical shape, the Helios mark works well on fuel station signage, vehicle graphics, uniforms, packaging, mobile apps, maps, retail environments and corporate documents. It is also a useful example for studying how large industrial brands use visual identity to shift public perception.
