The Boston Celtics’ current primary logo has been used since the 1996–97 season, although its famous leprechaun character dates back several decades earlier. Known as Lucky the Leprechaun, the figure spins a basketball while holding a shillelagh and is surrounded by the Boston Celtics name, creating one of the NBA’s most recognizable links between a team and its city’s Irish heritage.
Lucky was originally illustrated by Zang Auerbach, an editorial and sports artist and the brother of legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach. The current version introduced in 1996 did not replace his design, but gave the previously limited green, white and black logo a full-color treatment with gold, brown, tan and black details.
The Celtics have been unusually protective of the identity. When the team introduced a modernized Lucky alternate logo in 2014, it was created in-house and deliberately based on Zang Auerbach’s earlier artwork, while the primary logo was left unchanged. The full-color Lucky has now represented the team for three decades.
