The bat symbol has been part of Batman’s identity since the character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, but its shape has changed repeatedly across comics, films, television and games. The black bat inside a yellow oval became one of the most recognizable versions of the emblem and remains closely associated with the classic Batman identity.

The yellow oval was introduced in 1964 with Detective Comics #327 as part of Batman’s “New Look” era. Artist Carmine Infantino helped redesign Batman’s appearance under editor Julius Schwartz, placing the black bat against a bright yellow oval and creating a clearer, more distinctive chest emblem.

The symbol became even more widely recognized through the 1966 Batman television series and later screen adaptations. Batman has since returned to plain black bat emblems in many versions, so there is no single symbol used across every modern interpretation of the character; the yellow oval instead represents one of the most enduring designs in Batman’s visual history.
