The Atlanta Hawks’ current identity is built around the famous “Pac-Man” hawk, a minimalist symbol that first appeared in 1972. The original mark was designed by Bob Wages at Atlanta advertising agency McDonald & Little, using negative space to form a hawk’s head inside a circular shape.
The symbol returned as the team’s primary identity in 2015 through a modern brand system created by RARE Design. Its latest update arrived for the 2020–21 season, when the Hawks refined the typography, returned to a classic red, yellow, black and gray palette, and removed the word “Club” from the circular primary logo. The 2020 identity work was developed by the Hawks’ creative and merchandising teams led by Shirley Zhang and Amy Serino alongside Nike’s design team.
The “Pac-Man” nickname is actually newer than the logo itself: the Hawks introduced the design in 1972, eight years before the Pac-Man arcade game debuted in 1980. The resemblance came later, but the nickname became so closely associated with the mark that even the Hawks now use it when referring to the classic symbol.
