The History of Aptos

Microsoft introduced five possible replacements for Calibri in 2021: Bierstadt, Grandview, Seaford, Skeena and Tenorite. Each family represented a different approach to the modern sans serif, and Microsoft added all five to the Microsoft 365 font menu so users could try them in real documents and presentations.

Bierstadt, designed by Steve Matteson, was selected as the new Office default after the testing and feedback period. Matteson had created it as a contemporary grotesque inspired by Swiss typography, using precisely cut terminals and rational proportions while introducing enough organic detail to prevent the design from feeling mechanical.

Before the wider rollout, Bierstadt was renamed Aptos after the coastal town in Santa Cruz County, California. Microsoft announced the change in July 2023 and began introducing Aptos as the default font across Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, replacing Calibri after its long run as the familiar face of Office documents.

Aptos Font Family Versions

The standard Aptos family is designed for general document text, but Microsoft also developed related versions for more specific uses. Aptos Display has tighter spacing and sharper proportions for large headings, Aptos Narrow fits more text into limited horizontal space, Aptos Mono provides fixed-width characters for technical content, and Aptos Serif introduces a companion serif voice for more formal documents and editorial layouts.

Aptos vs Calibri

Calibri has softer corners, narrower proportions and a more visibly humanist construction. Aptos feels firmer and more structured, with straighter terminals, clearer joins and a stronger connection to Swiss-style grotesque typography. Both fonts are intended for everyday Office use, but Aptos produces a more contemporary and controlled page texture.

The two families are not metrically identical. Replacing Calibri with Aptos in an existing document can therefore change line breaks, table widths or pagination. For new presentations, reports and templates, Aptos is the more current Microsoft default; Calibri remains useful when visual consistency with older Office documents is important.

Character and Language Support

Aptos includes extended support for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic writing systems, together with Vietnamese characters and diacritics. This makes it suitable for multilingual business documents, international presentations, reports, interfaces and templates that require broader coverage than a basic Latin font.

Similar Fonts

Calibri is the most relevant comparison because it was the previous Microsoft Office default, although its softer curves give it a noticeably different character. Segoe UI shares Aptos’s practical Microsoft-oriented tone, while Arial and Helvetica Neue provide a more conventional neo-grotesque appearance. Inter, Open Sans and Source Sans 3 are useful open-source alternatives for interfaces, reports, presentations and other clean professional layouts.
