Download Apple Chancery font for free in TTF format. Apple Chancery is a calligraphic typeface created for Apple, combining the flowing rhythm of italic handwriting with the more structured proportions of traditional Renaissance chancery scripts.

Designed by Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes of the Bigelow & Holmes type foundry and released in 1993, Apple Chancery was created as a modern interpretation of Italian chancery cursive. Its restrained slant, relatively small x-height and decorative capitals give it a more formal character than casual handwriting fonts, while alternate forms and swashes add variation when supported by the application.

A Modern Chancery Typeface for Apple

Apple Chancery draws on the tradition of Italian chancery writing developed during the Renaissance. Rather than reproducing historical lettering directly, Bigelow and Holmes adapted its proportions and pen-written rhythm for digital typography. The result keeps the narrow, flowing character of chancery cursive without becoming as heavily slanted or ornamental as many decorative script fonts.

The typeface is closely related in concept to Lucida Calligraphy, another design by Bigelow and Holmes, but the two were built with different proportions. Apple Chancery uses a smaller x-height and gentler slant, giving it a more traditional handwritten appearance and making its capitals and ascenders more prominent.

Designed to Show Advanced Typography

Apple Chancery was also used to demonstrate Apple’s advanced typography capabilities. The font contains alternate letterforms and contextual variations that can make repeated characters look less mechanical, although access to these features depends on the software and text engine being used.

The Apple Chancery.ttf file available here is version 13.0d1e5, a build currently distributed with macOS. It remains part of Apple’s font collection decades after its original release.
