The Amazon logo combines a lowercase wordmark with its famous curved smile, one of the most recognizable symbols in modern retail. The smile doubles as an arrow connecting the letters “a” and “z,” originally created to communicate both customer satisfaction and Amazon’s ambition to offer everything from A to Z.

The smile identity was created by Turner Duckworth after receiving a brief from Jeff Bezos in 1998 and was officially introduced in January 2000. The agency transformed an earlier underline beneath the Amazon name into a curved arrow and smile, giving the company a simple symbol that could work equally well on a website, advertising or millions of shipping boxes.

In 2025, Amazon introduced the first major refinement of the logo in more than two decades as part of a global brand transformation developed by Amazon XCM and Koto. The familiar structure was preserved, but the smile became deeper and more expressive, the original letterforms were redrawn for greater consistency, and the orange was standardized as Smile Orange. The project also created Amazon Logo Sans to unify the logos of more than 50 sub-brands across the company.

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and Amazon.com opened for business as an online bookstore in July 1995 from his home in Bellevue, Washington. The company took its name from the Amazon River, reflecting Bezos’ goal of building a business with an enormous selection. Amazon quickly expanded beyond books, a shift that ultimately inspired the A-to-Z idea behind its famous smile logo.
