The current Abdi İbrahim logo was created by legendary Italian designer Massimo Vignelli and introduced on September 4, 2008. Its symbol is built from three concentric circles divided vertically through the center, creating a symmetrical composition that expresses what Vignelli described as the harmony of opposites or “positive opposition.”
The three rings represent the three generations of the family that led Abdi İbrahim, while the vertical line through their center symbolizes the Bosphorus separating Europe and Asia and refers to the company’s headquarters in Istanbul. The contrasting colors on either side of the line reinforce the idea of opposites working together, reflecting a Turkish family-owned company with an increasingly international presence and professional management.
The design also has an unusual historical inspiration. Vignelli developed the emblem from a pattern found on a Chinese plate in the Topkapı Palace collection, originally sent to Ottoman sultans as a gift. The pattern and its relationship to concepts such as yin and yang gave the identity another layer of meaning around balance, change and transformation.
Abdi İbrahim traces its history to 1912, when pharmacist Abdi İbrahim Bey established a small pharmacy in Istanbul’s Küçük Mustafapaşa district. By 1916 he was producing pharmaceutical preparations and sanitary products in the pharmacy’s laboratory. As the company expanded under pharmacist İbrahim Hayri Barut, it first used a logo based on the initials “İB”; after becoming a joint-stock company in 1975, the identity changed to the initials of Abdi İbrahim before Vignelli created the present logo in 2008.
